WOLF ROAD WILDFLOWERS & THE BUTTERFLY LADIES 6/20/2024
This is our second visit with the Butterfly Ladies, Linda and Kate. When the Chamber of Commerce Garden Walk was cancelled this year, they organized a pollinators tour of a few gardens around town. It was a small group and I (Israel) was lucky enough to be a part of it! The wildflower gardens in town are looking amazing! Thanks to Linda and Kate for including me and for organizing this awesome tour of beautiful Mokena! Enjoy!
MFP TOURS THE NEW MOKENA POLICE STATION 5/29/2024
Wednesday, May 29th, 2024, was the grand opening of the long awaited Mokena Police Station. This was about 15 years in the making and this high tech facility does not disappoint! With high tech virtual reality training, an indoor gun range, and a beautiful fitness center for the officers, this station is a significant upgrade of services for the community. Israel and Matt get to speak with Police Chief Benton and Deputy Chief Stumpf, a couple Village Trustees, police officers and staff. Everyone shared a similar excitement about this facility and what it will contribute to our community safety as well as the ability to attract the best and brightest. Congratulations to the Mokena Police Department and the Village of Mokena, for a job well done on a beautiful facility!
MEET RICK TRAFTON & AN UPDATE ON THE DOCK ON FRONT STREET 4/26/2024
Israel and Matt met up with The Dock restaurant owner, Rick Trafton, to get to know him and his restaurant, which will be making its home on Front Street in the near future! This is the second tour of the property and there have been major changes since our first visit! There will be more updates to come as this historical treasure on Front Street is brought back to life after so many years.
A WALKING HISTORY OF MOKENA'S FRONT STREET, WITH MATT & ISRAEL 4/10/2024
On a beautiful April evening, Matt and Israel took a walk down Mokena's Front Street and talked history. Matt, as always, is a wealth of information about Mokena and this video brings to life so many of the stories that we have shared on the podcast over the years. Matt Galik's Galaxy Award Presentation and the 2024 Teachers of The Year Awards 5/26/2024
Matt Galik, our co-host and Mokena Historian, received the Mokena 159 school district's Galaxy Award. We were able to surprise Matt with the presentation of the award. Also, on the last day of school for the 2024, the school holds a year end celebration. Part of the ceremony is the announcement of the teacher of the year from each of the 3 buildings. The awards are presented by the Mokena Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, Melissa Fedora. Congratulations to all of the winners and to all of the teachers for their hard work throughout the year!
A Walk Through Mokena's Marshall Cemetery; A Visit With Mokena's Founders 2/16/2024
Founded in 1839, the Marshall Cemetery is home to many of Mokena's founders, with names like Marshall, McGovney, and Jones. It is also the resting place of numerous war heros from the Civil War, and more. Matt gives us a walking tour as we cover only a few of the families buried here. The setting is a quiet country road, a little busier than it was in the 1800's, but it still maintains a charm of yesteryear, where you can still feel a little of what it felt like back in the early days of Mokena. We hope you enjoy this walk through of the historic, Marshall Cemetery!
The Story of Mokena Mayor Joe Werner - "Do What's Best For Mokena" 3/26/2024
Mayor Joe Werner cared deeply about Mokena and its people. He served as both Village Trustee and Mayor and made many lasting contributions to Mokena. Sadly, Mayor Joe passed away on Christmas Eve of 2023 after fighting brain cancer. I am honored that we get to share some of Mayor Joe’s story and all he did to make our Village a better place.
mokena schools: 1872-1929 2/16/2024
One of Mokena's most beautiful buildings was the 2 story Mokena schoolhouse that sat at the corner of todays Front Street and Schoolhouse Road. Today all that remains is the old bell that sat atop the school and beckoned many kids to school over the years. Along with Matt's great stories, this video shares a lot of great photos as well as a few videos of the old bell as it sits today. Enjoy!
A WALK WITH GIGI ON THE SCENE, ALONG WITH ANGIE & CHUCK 4/19/2024
Gigi On The Scene and her late brother, Levi Pitboxer, share through their humans, Andrea and Chuck, some of the most beautiful areas of Mokena with their followers near and far. Chuck and Andrea met and were married because of their dogs and they clear love their pups! It was great to hear their stories of coming to Mokena and finding each other here. They tell us some of their favorite parks and places to explore. I really enjoyed taking a walk with Gigi, Andrea and Chuck and I hope you will enjoy hearing some of their story too!
